Socio-economic empowerment project
- The overall goal of the project was to improve the status of women who are socially, economically, politically and religiously disadvantaged.
Mandwi had implemented “Socioeconomic Empowerment of Nepalese Muslim Women of Rautahat District Project” in the Gaur Municipality (Sabgadha, Ward No 6) with the technical and financial assistance from Penny Appeal. To contribute to the goal mainly two specific objectives were set, i.e. 1. To increase the earnings, employment opportunity and entrepreneurship skills for Muslim’s girls and young women and 2. To strengthen women’s knowledge about their rights. The project directly targeted 200 Muslim girls, young women and women while 1000 family members, ward representative, Mayor, Vice Mayor, Palika and district based officials and agencies representatives e.g. district coordination committee, district police office, district administration office, BAR association etc indirectly.

– 6 Muslim girls started mobile repairing (3 shops) in a group, 13 women beautician (7 beauty parlour) in a group and 3 women e-rickshaw. In this way, total 22 girls and women started their own small business
– 25 Muslim women started off season vegetable farming while 30 women sewing at their own home while 7 women serving parlour from home. Similarly, 4 girls are serving mobile repairing from their home. In this way, total 88 adolescent girls and young women are engaged as self-employment at home
– In total 88 Muslim girls (20) and women (68) are earning 3000-7000 in average till date from their small business and saving 7000 per month from self-employment
– 25 women who have started vegetable farming have ownership in land (at least 2-3 Kathas)
– 25 women skilled with seasonal and off seasonal farming training, they received seed money and started vegetable farming at small scale that is helpful in fulfillment of the daily consumption of vegetable at households’ level and it saved about 5000-6000 (per member) Nepali rupees in a month because previously they used to purchase vegetables from the market
– 2 deep borings have been established and farmer are taking benefit from it in relation to irrigating their offseason vegetable farming and seasonal farming like paddy
– 2 power tillers received by women farmer group as a sustainable resilience livelihood activities tools and technology, they used power tiller for cultivating land that contributed to reduce women’s hard labor. In addition, four women skilled with driving power tiller
– 20 girls skilled with technology (computer-10, mobile-10) friendly training, out of them 6 girls are successively running their own two mobile repairing centers (3 girls for each center) and started to earn money. The training was completed by 25th (mobile) and 28th May (computer). In these 2 weeks of starting they earned about 3000 because it is initial phase, they are struggling in the market to make the new mobile repairing customer
– 13 girls, 2 young women and 5 women (total 20) skilled with Beauty Parlor training, out of them 13 women opened 7 beauty parlors (2 women per 6 beauty parlor and one women started self) and successively running from 15th June because after the training the materials were listed and supported to them by 1st week of June. In this short period, they earned about 4000 as there is competition in a market and hard to attract the new customer in the initial phase
– Total 30 beneficiaries (girls 14, young women 7 and women 9) skilled with Sewing Training. After the training, they started tailoring at their own home. They planned to open a tailor in a group, however, they are sewing the clothes of family and neighbor and from that they are saving about 7000 monthly bases
– 5 women skilled with E Rickshaw driving and 3 women started driving from 1st July 2019 only because due to the loan processing and complex process of cooperatives and bank with compulsory collateral it took a lot of time in the absence of sufficient collateral to the beneficiaries as they are economical vulnerable
